One wish of mine will not be granted in 2009, but I'll keep it on there until it happens.
The only good thing about the Chargers ending their season today is that my football fanaticism can end now. Or pause at least, until the next season.
As I watched the game with my family, I kept thinking as they showed LT and Merriman sitting there helpless on the sidelines next to our offense (which sat out the entire third quarter) was that it wasn't meant to be. After this crazy rollercoaster of a season, it couldn't have ended with our stars not being able to participate in the game that would decide their fate.
What I really admire about our team is that individually they are great, but you can tell that as a team, they are even better. We don't have the drama queens of Dallas or the showboating Ocho Cinco, we have good men who are in the paper for their charity work and not for their off the field antics. And by paper, I mean the Union Tribune since you know most people couldn't name more than three of our players.
The thing with the Chargers is, there's so many great pieces that they struggle to put them together every game. I don't know if it's the head coach or the injuries or what, but if we could overcome the obstacles of this season, we have the potential for anything next year.
So once again, I will be boycotting the Super Bowl just as I boycotted it last year and the World Series as well. The only teams I might slightly care about would be the ultimate underdogs (the Cardinals) who haven't been in a playoff game for 20 years or the Ravens with their cute rookie quarterback, Lorenzo Neal and Cam Cameron redeeming himself as their offensive coordinator.
See ya in a few months Chargers!
The only reason I knew Sproles before this season was because he 1) he plays a lot during preseason and my family and I go to at least one of those games every year and 2) Kristy calls him her "twin" because they are both 5'6". Oh yeah, and he was 10 lbs at birth, earning him the nickname "Tank". But we all know him as "Sprolesy".
Don't get me wrong, I love LT. I think that he has elevated the game of football not only with his mad skills but also with his community service and humility. But there's just something about the understudy finally getting a chance to shine that makes the victory that much sweeter. Plus, this guy is the shortest player in the NFL. We all know height should never make you underestimate a person but sometimes there's still that bias. I can't even imagine the kind of courage you need to try to run down people who are twice your size while trying to catch/hold a football...
Maybe I should have taken what little money I have and bet it on the Chargers this weekend. I probably would have won enough to get me through the next couple of months without subbing, but even I wasn't that sure about how this would play out. The best and worst thing about football is that on any given sunday, anything can happen.
It felt great to be back home for this game because everything becomes an impromptu celebration when my family's around. We all woke up from staying up all night practicing for the big show to eat breakfast and watch the game in our pajamas. Then more people started trickling in and suddenly it was a party. I was so excited at one point I jumped on my aunt's couch all crazy Tom Cruise style. But it didn't end there.
We all practiced for a few more hours since the Denver game wasn't showing and kept checking our phones for score updates. I cut practice short so we could sneak out and watch the end of it somewhere. We ended up at an Oggi's Pizza in Otay Ranch where it was standing room only just in time for the last 3 minutes of the game. Amidst chants of "Denver Sucks!" and rampant texting of score updates to those not fortunate enough to come with us, karma smiled upon us and we got a chance to go to the playoffs.
This season was fairly painful but suddenly it doesn't seem so bad after all...
This was the only 1:31 of the game worth watching. The rest had us screaming at the TV, threatening to mute the dumb ass commentators and hoping for a miracle. Thank God we finally got a little karmic payback from our heartbreaking last minute losses this season with our own last minute action! =D
Then Denver lost and our chance at playoffs went to slim instead of none!

Also, fantasy football is a scary addiction...it sucks me into a football vortex every Sunday (sometimes Monday and Thursday too) and makes me completely useless for hours at a time.
But I won the first round of playoffs already and kicked ass by 60+ points and one player still going! I should have joined a money related pool ;- )
